Panama-born, Brazilian and American by blood, with a Pilgrim on one branch of the family tree and a Yale president on another — Jordana Brewster's background is as international as any in Hollywood.
Born in Panama, raised across three countries
Brewster was born on April 26, 1980, in Panama City, and holds dual Panamanian and American citizenship. Her mother, Maria João (Sousa Leão), is a Brazilian former model who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1978; her father, Alden Brewster, is an American investment banker. She spent her earliest years in London, moved to Brazil around age six, and settled in Manhattan at about ten — a childhood that left her comfortable in Portuguese as well as English.
The Brewster name
On her father's side, the family history is genuinely storied. Her grandfather was Kingman Brewster Jr., the president of Yale University from 1963 to 1977 and later the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Further back, the line traces to the Mayflower: Brewster is a direct descendant of the Pilgrim elder William Brewster and fellow passenger Edward Doty. It's an unusually deep set of American roots for an actress born in Panama to a Brazilian mother.
Yale, in the middle of a franchise
When The Fast and the Furious opened in 2001 and turned her into a movie star, Brewster was still an undergraduate. She stepped back from acting to finish her degree, graduating from Yale with a B.A. in English literature in 2003 — two years after the film that made her famous. Few franchise leads have juggled a blockbuster launch and an Ivy League diploma at the same time.
Her own family
Brewster was married to producer Andrew Form from 2007 until their divorce was finalized in 2021, and the two have two sons, Julian (born 2013) and Rowan (born 2016), both via surrogacy. In September 2022 she married Mason Morfit, the CEO of the investment firm ValueAct Capital. She has spoken often and warmly about motherhood and about carrying her Brazilian heritage into her own family's life.
